Gonzalez visits the "brain of transport" of the Community, a pioneer in Europe and a key to Madrid 2020

The president of the Community of Madrid, Ignacio González

The president of the Community of Madrid, Ignacio González, visited the Center for Integrated Public Transport Management of Madrid (Citram), the first center in Europe to coordinate and control in real time all transportation in the region. After five years of work, which have been gradually incorporating more than 40 operators serving in Madrid, the Community already has a real "brain" transport, which operates in real time all the subway lines, light rail, city and intercity buses, suburban rail and exchangers, and also is connected with the chambers of the General Directorate of Traffic and Emergency.

The innovative nature of this center has attracted the interest of experts from around the world and is one of the main advantages of the Madrid 2020 Olympic bid. In this regard, González noted that the International Olympic Committee has been providing a very high rating Madrid transport in the three nominations, but on this occasion the ability to control all transportation from a single center significantly increases the competitive advantage of Madrid on the other applicants.

"Unify all coordination of public transport in the region facilitates decision -making to any incident and especially during the celebration of mass events, which can guarantee the mobility of citizens even in exceptional situations, as well as significantly improve the security" said the president.

Since having real-time information to all transport service improves the responding effectively to the needs of travelers and keeping them constantly informed, thus preserving the high quality of public transport in Madrid who has become an international benchmark.

Progressive Implementation
From this center are controlling more than 20,000 cameras and 6,000 panes and you know the location and condition of service 5,000 vehicles in different modes. In total, from this center are controlled the routes of all public transport in Madrid, totaling two million kilometers a day, equivalent to fifty times around the world or five trips to the moon.

The operation of this center is the result of an intense and constant planning and development work that the Community of Madrid has been conducted through the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid. Thus, the first step was taken in 2008 by integrating the information of recently opened exchangers (Plaza de Castilla , Plaza Elíptica, Príncipe Pío and Moncloa), and Avenida de América. Later joined Metro, Light Rail and EMT and, thanks to the Plan for Modernization of intercity buses, lines that service the 179 municipalities of the Community of Madrid. In addition, you also get Commuter information, traffic and emergencies.

To coordinate all these data, the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid has developed tools "tailored" that integrate the data of each mode and at an incident, they allow an overall system approach. It also establishes a protocol alarm with different levels at any alteration in the public transport system based on time condition, the severity and the number of customers involved. It is noteworthy that these applications were developed by Consortium staff, so it has not been necessary to deal with cost of outsourcing.

The center operates 24 hours, seven days a week and has a connection to emergency services and security. The facilities have a crisis room that can be used for key interventions in transport, such as the celebration of major events like the Olympics.

Among the applications, GEIS stands out like issue tracker, in which each operator dumps the information on your network and to incidents during the operation to run automatic alarm system.

Also, the CCTV "CCTV multimodal" allows viewing images integrated over 20,000 video cameras from different sources. For its part, the graphic supervisor (SGRAF) allows a visual synthesis and state georeferenced public transport system, with different thematic layers, base maps and the location of 5,000 public transport vehicles in real time. And finally, the traveler information system (SGIP) unifies the information provided to public transport users, by sending notices to more than 6,000 coordinated dynamic information panels located in the transport system , and devices mobile (smartphone applications).

Overall benefits for all
During his visit, Ignacio González stressed that these facilities benefit all those involved in the development of public transport: the own customers to whom he communicates in real time, in a unified and homogeneous state; to the system operators that minimize the impact of the conditions and take corrective measures; to the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid, who have a greater knowledge of system status and ability to optimize and manage the service, especially in extraordinary situations, and finally, to services safety and emergencies that have an interlocutor with an integrated vision in the field of public transport.

The advantages of these facilities have already been shown at major and multitudinous events as the World Youth Days, the final of the Champions League, snow days or different strikes. "With this center, unique in the world, Madrid again demonstrates its leading capability in R & D in the field of transport and the ability of collaboration between companies providing administration and public services, which then allow our transportation system public in a global example to follow",  has concluded the regional president.
