The Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid has been re-elected as vice president of the Association of European Metropolitan Transport Authorities (EMTA) for the next two years, following the conclusion of the last General Council held in Vienna.
With this new election, the Madrid regional body holds office for the third consecutive time and strengthens its European leadership in public transport. EMTA is an association of 27 members, among which are the metropolitan transportation authorities largest in Europe, providing service to approximately 90 million citizens.
The new Board of Directors is chaired by Birmingham Transportation Authority (CENTRO) and the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid with the Paris transport authority (STIF) hold the vice. Among the key issues to be addressed in this new mandate are: the challenges of public transport in times of crisis with the reduction of public finances, the fourth railway package currently being debated in the European Union and its impact on the urban networks, the sustainable urban Mobility Plans are being boosted by the European Union; service concessions of different public transport networks in the European regulatory framework of public service obligations, the application of new technologies for payment of tickets, etc..
Indeed, these issues have already been discussed in various technical seminars held in parallel with the General Council of EMTA and have had representatives from the European Commission for Transport.
The European Metropolitan Transport Authorities (EMTA) was created in 1998 to form a space for the exchange of information and best practices between public authorities responsible for planning, integrating and funding of public transport services major European cities. The Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid has always participated in this organism and leads to be considered an international benchmark.
Keep in mind that currently Madrid conducts eight European projects in transport and is also a member of EMTA, is present in other prestigious international associations such as the International Union of Public Transport (UITP) and Latin American Association of Metro and Subway (ALAMYS).
The contribution of the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid to the planning, organization and integrated management of all modes of public transport in the Community is an example to follow and only last year the agency attended 40 foreign delegations.
