The Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM) has controlled from its facilities a safety drill in the public transport system, presenting various technological innovations in the framework of the European project Secur-Ed. The main contribution of this initiative is to validate the technical and operational modules designed to enhance the safety and sense of security in the major modes of public transport.
The First Conference on Integrating technology to improve security on public transport took place at the headquarters of the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid, where the delegation of experts could know the operation of Center for Integrated Public Transport Management of Madrid (Citram). It is a pioneer in Europe that centralizes and monitors in realtime all aspects of public transport safety of the Community of Madrid.
To mark this day, from Citram presented case studies simulating various situations that can disrupt the normal functioning of the transport system. Also presented the progress in automation of alarms and coordination of actions between transport operators and infrastructure, constituting an example of technology integration in the transport system of the Community.
From Citram are controlled over 20,000 cameras and 6,000 panes and you know the location and condition of service of more than 5,000 vehicles of different modes of transport. In total, since Citram paths are controlled all public transport in Madrid, totaling two million miles a day, equivalent to fifty times around the world or five trips to the moon.
To coordinate all these data, the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid has developed various tools that integrate data of each mode of transport and at an event, act allow overall system approach. It also establishes a protocol alarm with different levels to any alteration in the public transport system based on time condition, the severity and the number of customers involved. It is worth noting that these applications were developed by Consortium staff, so it was not necessary to meet the cost of outsourcing.
The center operates 24 hours, seven days a week and has a connection to emergency services and security. The facilities have a crisis room that can be used for key interventions in transport, such as the celebration of major events like the Olympics.
The First Conference on Integrating technology to improve security on public transport concluded with a visit to the Central Station Alarm of EMT (CRA).
A project based on the demonstration
Secur-Ed Project is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community (2007-2013). With a total budget of over 42 million, Secur-Ed is the project of this type with more funding today.
This is a demonstrator project, which implies that innovations must be tested in real environments. This is ensured by its 39 partners, which include transport authorities, operators, industry and research centers.
The aim of Secur-Ed is to improve safety on public transport in Europe. To this end, by associating public authorities and industry operators in the sector, have developed modular solutions that have been tested in 4 major European regions (Madrid, Paris, Milan and Berlin), which has become this project an example to follow.
In the case of Madrid, the project focuses on the automation of processes and information between agents involved in the integration of systems for decision support and monitoring of the safety of public transport networks of Madrid.
This project is another example of the high level of technical involvement Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid, which is currently participating in several of the most prominent public transportation projects worldwide.
