A delegation of MPs and French experts visited Madrid public transport with the aim of finding solutions to mobility problems which has the large metropolitan area of Paris, in which they live about 5 million citizens.
On Thursday 5th and Friday 6th of September, a total of 13 MPs of all French political groups and four experts in the field of public transport and 11 responsible for a major road French companies are learning the best practices developed in the Community of Madrid, through the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid, who have become European and international reference.
Keep in mind that while Paris city has a rate for displacement of 63.6% public transport, very similar to the city of Madrid, its metropolitan area recorded only 30% of public transport movements, far from Madrid which rate reaches 50%.
Importantly, this difference is that in the French case, only a third of the citizens of the Île-de-France has access to public transportation. Also, 25% of Parisians spend at least two hours a day in transportation to and from work, which is a significant loss of competitiveness.
The aim of the French officials is to establish different measures to overcome this problem by copying the model of Madrid. The Community, through the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid, has developed an extensive network of public transport based on the principle of intermodality. For this reason, among other activities, the French delegation visited two major interchangers for the region: Moncloa and Príncipe Pío.
In addition, high frequency and volume of intercity buses service with optimal organization by corridors have made this system basic for mobility, with 40% of use compared to 16% registered in the large metropolitan area of Paris.
The Ile-de-France Region has adopted last year in the deliberations of the Urban Development Plan (UDP) put the emphasis on developing multimodal of the structuring road network. To move the Madrid model to this performance assumes deploy public transport trunk lines by road connected to large multimodal centers, with other modes of transport (Metro, Commuter, Light Rail ...).
The design of public transport in Madrid by the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid is a role model at all levels, as demonstrated in this case. Last year alone more than 40 foreign delegations visited this agency to echo his achievements in the field of collective mobility. Also leads eight European projects to determine best practices in this sector.
